Images between reality and non-reality
The food medium I have chosen for clothes are not protective enough for our body, or durable. Also, it is unmanageable to the passing of time and is easily affected by surroundings. An original function of clothes as a protector for skin is totally destroyed since my clothes are made with food. In my imagination, anything could be considered “clothing” without a formal notion and frame that are usually represented as contexture of textile in a process of making clothes - with a mannequin in my case.
I create my own world of reality by generating a completely different set of images that contradict the conventional notion of food and clothes. As time goes by, the food from my work do go through a progression of disappearance due to the nature of food and gets gradually changed into the hideous state fading its shape and color in the process.
I drag out the types of images that can only exist in my mind and imagination into a reality and yet, it eventually disappears. I have physically made these images but they are the creation of illusion and ultimately what you see is the images of phantoms. My works remain as the medium of photographs, and it holds the time and makes us believe that the creation does exist in the real world.
A photograph captures a temporary moment, and the same moment ? and whatever happens next ? do not exist beyond that point. We mislead ourselves thinking that the temporary images possess the type of fanciful and fresh sensation in the photographic reality forever, when the foods rotted away and they do not hold any trace of their once captured images by the time the photo has been produced. We could delude ourselves even though the images are unsubstantial. We visually would feel the pleasure by suggesting a temporary situation could last.
My works, as an image between reality and non-reality, are talking about things that are unsubstantial and things that have been losing its essence. Also, they are, as food, empty and useless images since they are just borrowing the forms of clothes as a hollow shell that is not able ever last forever.
Photography has a power to make us believe. Although we can endlessly manipulate the photographs, we assume that a photograph of manipulated world we see are based on reality, rather than a blindly-made image because a camera is able to reproduce the world as it is and makes us to have an opportunity to see the world differently.
Thus, we are embarrassed at some point when we face those kinds of photographs and think that the world in the photograph is what we would like to believe and have.? In the movie The Invention of Lying (2009), the world is getting beautiful since a person has invented a lie in the world where lying has not existed before. People live in a totally different world after he invents a lie for a good purpose. When it is possible to live as another person and exaggerate himself or herself, an individual become confident. I believe that a photograph could be the lie-for-good-purpose which makes everything possible. This is why I keep fascinated by the role of photography as it allows me to experience the other type of world, which is very different from the actual reality.
